The History of the Station Hotel Dumfries

In June 1897, The Station Hotel, Dumfries opened its doors to the public.

Built on a site opposite the Railway Station, it was a fore-runner of its time, including such modern conveniences as electric lights, a passenger lift and heating which was ventilated mechanically to all rooms vie flues and upward to the central tower, a well known landmark in Dumfries.

All the external walls are built with rock faced square dressed rubble from the nearby Locharbriggs quarry. Construction of the hotel for the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company was by local, Glasgow and Belfast firms.

Through its ownership by the railways the hotel built up a reputation locally and was frequented regularly by the County set, it being the place to be seen.

The Station Hotel was purchased in 1972 for £30,000 by Mr Hal McGhie, a local business man and the present owner.

The business mix for the hotel has changed since it was first constructed and with the additions of the Bistro and the introduction of a fine dining restaurant the hotel now offers a variety of dining experiences and excellent value. A new Garden Room, built using Locharbriggs sandstone, has also been added with the help of a Feng Shui consultant employed to increase the chi (good feeling) for guests using the hotel.

We are certain that in 2097, the hotel will still be an attraction in Dumfries which will recapture the imagination of the population and reflect their thoughts to a time of gentle travel and great railways.
